Statewide initiative offers students incentives for reaching their academic goals

Assemblyman Kevin Byrne visited with students at Matthew Patterson Elementary school to celebrate the start of the New York State Assembly Summer Reading Challenge on Friday, June 8.

Assemblyman Kevin Byrne (R,C,I,Ref-Mahopac) celebrated the start of his 2018 New York State Assembly Summer Reading Challenge with a visit to Matthew Patterson Elementary School on Friday, June 8. The program is designed to keep students in an academic frame of mind throughout the summer months and prepare them for the upcoming school year.  Students who complete the summer reading program will receive a special Excellence in Reading Certificate.

Byrne’s kickoff celebration offered students the chance to review the Summer Reading Challenge brochure to learn more about how they can participate, as well as discuss the importance of reading during the summer months and its proven link to improved academic performance.

“I was thrilled to kick off our 2018 Summer Reading Challenge alongside the students of Matthew Patterson Elementary, and look forward to another year of enthusiastic participation from our local students,” Byrne said. “Evidence shows that children who engage in recreational reading often see strong academic performance as a result, and the Summer Reading Challenge provides students a fun and valuable chance not only to enjoy some great books, but also to learn valuable lessons about setting and achieving their scholastic goals.”
